CHA

Gagandeep Kalirai, the director and animator, approached me at a very early stage so we could collaborate througout the whole production. The sound design process started quite early once the storyboard was finished. This served as a ground for the work that followed. We then moved on to recording dialogue with voice actors, selecting takes to be used for the animation of the characters.

Working very closely with Saul Brennan, the composer, the soundtrack was created, mixing the products of sound design and music composition, blurring the separation between the two different areas. Mixed originally for Surround 5.1. Later adapted to stereo.

This animation has gone on to win multiple awards and been screened internationally. It was longlisted for the 2021 British BAFTAS and won the FANtastiche Jury Prize at Stuttgart Festival of animated film.

“Bibi is plagued by memories of the past, and her granddaughter Simran is starting to notice. In resolving to teach Simran how to make Cha, they are pulled into the past, to Bibi's memories of one fateful day in Delhi, 1984.”
